Dazaifu Tenmangu
Dazaifu Tenmangu is dedicated to Michizane Sugawara who was a scholar and a politician in the end of the 10th century. Please do not miss to visit.
With faith as a god of learning, many people visit and pray for passing exams and improving in study.
It is also famous as a plum spot. There is the legendary “Tobi Ume” that came flying from Kyoto (the capital of those days) longing for Michizane, but please extend your visit to a plum forest behind the shrine.
During the weekend, tourists are making a line from the approach to the shrine.
There is a free guide tour in English available but it requires a reservation, please call to +81 (0)92 922 8225 three days in advance.
It is my most fun to have a freshly baked “Umegae mochi” specialty of Dazaifu, at the shops behind the shrine.
